Examination of educator views on applicability of Turkish music solfege and theory lesson with traditional mesk system

Transferring the cultural heritage of Turkish music to future generations is based on a teaching and transmission system called meşk. With this system, the continuity of the cultural accumulation of Turkish music for centuries has been ensured. The tradition of meşk, which is based on imitation and repetition within the teacher-student relationship, has gained different dimensions since the beginning of the twentieth century with the use of the notation system and its inclusion in education. In this study, it is aimed to determine the applicability of the Turkish Music Theory and Solfeggio course, which is taught in conservatories that provide Turkish music education, with the traditional meşk system based on the views of the educators. For this purpose, data; It was collected by making a questionnaire and structured interviews from 20 of the educators of the Turkish Music Theory and Solfege course, who could be reached and participated in the research voluntarily. As a result of the findings obtained from the research, it has been revealed that the makams and the characteristic features such as fret and tune are better understood in the application of the Turkish Music Theory and Solfeggio lesson with the meşk system. It has been concluded that the notation is a supportive tool and that there is no need for a new notation of the meşk system.
