THE GENDARME COMMAND BAND IN THE TURKISH ARMED FORCES (M. SC. Thesis) Suat Yılmaz GAZÎ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY MAY, 1996 ABSTRACT This thesis has been prepared for the purpose of examining the Gendarme General Command Band in the Turkish Armed Forces, rn this direction, in order to be able to make the Gendarme General Command Band, of which origin goes back to the Mızıka~i Hümayun, examined morefully, the historical development of the Turkish Bands from the time of Mizika-i Hümayun up to now, has been tried to be researched. In parallel with this development, the chronological gradations of the Gendarme Band from the day of it is foundation to the present, and the personnel (conductor- performer) sources of the bands have been determined with the help of a thoroughly data searching, several negotiations and investigations. On the other hand, the experts, who have great deal of contributions to the foundation and development of our bands in terms of education; conduction, performance, composition and arrangement, have been brought about in this thesis, as well. In condusion, it has been thrown light on the matter that, when we consider the geographical location in the country, in the republican period the Gendarme General Command Band, which takes an important mrole in making the voiced much music become Widespread and developed, and wich has still been carrying on this charge, could take important duties on in our musical improvement in cooperation with the musical education institutions as a part of our cultural and artistic improvement, and it is much more possible to benefit from the band music over the country with some proposals.
