Refusal speech acts and strategies used by foreign language learners of Turkish

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to determine the strategies used by Turkish as a foreign language learners of Turkish as a foreign language to use the speech act of refusal in everyday communication situations. For this purpose, the participants were given a Discourse (Speech) Completion Test consisting of 10 situations that were checked by field experts. The data obtained were classified as "Direct" and "Indirect" refusal strategies according to nationalities, gender and age groups. The research is a case study from qualitative research models. The data were analyzed by content analysis. The sample of this study consists of 35 volunteer foreign students learning Turkish at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Turkish and Foreign Language Teaching Application and Research Center in the academic year 2022-2023. Within the variables of nationality, gender and age group, all participants mostly used the sub-strategy of inappropriate statement (negative willingness/ability) from direct strategies and mostly used the sub-strategy of excuse, reason, explanation from indirect strategies.
