Abstract (EN)

Today's technological advances, rapid economic growth, rising prosperity, and urbanization have significantly increased waste generation worldwide. As urban populations increase, the amount of waste has also risen, bringing with it environmental problems. Consumption-oriented lifestyles have further complicated the nature of waste and its impact on the environment. Waste management has become a significant problem, particularly in developing countries, and this has led to the need to develop sustainable policies. This study, undertaken from this perspective, aims to examine the role of public awareness in the process of separating and recycling household waste in Şanlıurfa within the framework of waste management policies in Turkey. In addition to theoretical studies, data was collected using multiple-choice questions and analyzed using SPSS, a frequently used program in social sciences. Data obtained using a multiple-choice survey method was used to investigate individuals' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding waste management, as well as the role of local governments. The findings indicate that the people of Şanlıurfa generally have a positive attitude toward recycling practices, but lack sufficient knowledge and guidance regarding implementation. In this context, it has been concluded that in order to create an effective recycling system (separated recycling), municipalities should increase public awareness campaigns, improve infrastructure services and make recycling practices more integrated.
