Vocabulary comparison of 6. grade Turkish course books in Turkey and Azerbijan

Abstract (EN)

As the most important means of Turkish education, native language coursebooks are supposed to reflect the vocabulary of Turkish successfully. In relation to teaching the vocabulary skills, the grounding for the basic four skills, the coursebooks which are the first reference guides for both teachers and students must be rich in vocabulary. In this study the 6th grade Turkish course book published by MEB and recommended by board of education and discipline for 2015-2016 academic year, and Turkish course book prepared by Bilal HESENLİ, Esger GULİYEV, Soltan Hüseyinoğlu to be used for 2012-2013 academic year for 6th grade and recommended by Azerbaijan Ministry of education on 01.04.2004 with 265 numbered decision have been used. The books have been computerized to word document, the words are listed and transformed to excell programme and examined according to type, function and origin. After that, the recurring and nonrecurring vocabulary have been determined. The data have been elaborated with the nonrecurring vocabulary. With the idea that it might be helpfull, the readability of the texts have also been determined. In the end, all the data have been transformed into graphics and added to the study. With the data gathered at the end of the study it is found out that the nonrecurring words are 1/3 of recurring words in the the Turkish coursebooks in Turkey and Azarbaijan. This reveals the fact that the richness of vocabulary is not sufficiently reflected in coursebooks. The study has been conducted with the aim of finding out the distribution of vocabulary according to type and function, the roots of vocabulary, the readability and frequency of texts in coursebooks, the adequacy of vocabulary, and the appropriateness of the age of adressse to the cognitive development.
