The educational supervision in primary schools in Turkey; a meta-synthesis study

This study aims to emerge current educational supervision status with meta-synthesis method based on the research results between 1995 and 2012, by considering primary schools in Turkey. In this study, ?meta-synthesis? research method was used to synthesize both quantitative and qualitative research findings.The study comprises 73 master and Phd theses that were prepared by using quantitative or qualitative research methods between 1995 and 2012, including supervision implementations in Turkey?s primary schools by province education supervisors, which is able to serve this meta study?s purpose in the frame of inclusion and exclusion processes.The findings indicated that supervisors? behaviors during the supervising process, guidance, vocational assistance and roles of training on the job, and their technical sufficiency were found ?low? level of sufficiency by the teachers.Furthermore, the results of the study revealed that province education supervisors encountered with ?high? level of troubles like in supervisors? recruiting and coaching, the organizational structure of supervision (authority, workload, communication etc.), working conditions, supervision continuance, in-service training. Moreover, province education supervisors reflected that there is necessity of renovation in those areas mentioned above, and they conflicted in ?high? level when they practice their roles of ?guidance-vocational assistance and coaching on work? and ?investigating and researching?.It was also found that education supervisors, teachers and school principals consider current supervision applications inadequate in terms of their consideration of modern supervision principles, therefore, the perception of education supervisors, teachers and school principals towards supervision process were ?low? level, and their expectation towards supervision process were ?high? level.
