The panel data analysis of the factors determining the unemployment in Turkey

Employment structure and unemployment aspect are the important indicators of economic and social development level of a country. Unemployment is also one of the main issues affecting the economic and social development of Turkey primarily. As a versatile problem, unemploymet effects not only unemployed individuals, but also effects the all community. To eliminate problem of unemployment, before all else the factor which determine unemployment must be identified and in the light of this data should be permanent solutions to the problem of unemployment. In this study, to put forward determinants of unemploymet in Turkey, the indicators of unemployment are examined by using the data of Income and Living Conditions Survey Panel held by TurkStat during the years 2007 and 2010. The logit and panel logit model is used in the analysis. According to some analysis results, men are more unemployed than women. If individuals are married, the unemployment rate is reduced. When the education level is examined, it is seen that the uneducated individuals are less likely to be unemployed than educated ones. Especially for women, as the education level rises, unexpectedly unemployment increases. The most important variables affecting the possibility of unemployment are observed as education, age, gender, health conditions and the occupation.
