Abstract (EN)
Creating virtual realistic environments is important for all of the visual application. 3D computer games, simulators, virtual reality programs and 3D animation films use digitally created backgrounds. These backgrounds are consisting of terrain, sky, vegetation and weather conditions. Backgrounds are very important parts of 3D visual applications because they set the mood. The goal of this study is to research the current environmental modeling techniques and implement them to create realistic 3D environments. During this process different branches of environmental modeling will be examined. There are four major branches: terrain, sky, vegetation, sky and weather conditions. Terrain generation is the part that is concerned with the creation of the realistic earth forms. With sky generation techniques, virtual worlds are limited with proper atmospheres. Vegetation generation branch is related with the trees and plants and adds a great realism to 3D applications. And lastly, weather conditions simulation helps to add meteorological elements to applications: such as clouds, rain, snow, etc. Another aspect of real-time 3D weather and environment modeling is implementing the researched techniques. For example different techniques are implemented for terrain and sky generation. Later these techniques have been combined in different couples to find the best terrain-sky combination. The most important comparison criteria are performance and realism. Some techniques create excellent results but it takes minutes to create the terrain. Adversely, some techniques works very fast but results are not satisfying.
