Corrosion analysis on aircraft maintenance

Maintenance of aircraft is a process which begins with the production ofaircraft and continues until the aircraft stops flying. The purpose of maintenance isto keep the aircraft always ready with flight safety and required performance.Corrosion is a phenomena which starts with the production of the materials and it isimpossible to eliminate. In general corrosion is the degradation of aircraft materialsafter interaction with environment effects.In this study, the general information about corrosion is given by differenttypes of corrosion which is the most commonly observed on aircraft materials isanalyzed. Afterwards, corrosion behavior of metals and their alloyed states arecompared.Maintenance approaches, their development processes, corrosion attacksand corrosion prone areas of aircraft against corrosion were determined,relationship between corrosion and fatigue is examined. Non Destructive Inspectionwhich is very important for finding out the damage and defects is presented and theway that these techniques are used for the determination of corrosion damage isexamined.The aim of the study is to show the negative effects of corrosion on safety andcost of aircraft by analyzing on aircraft maintenance and corrosion, and to realizethe importance of corrosion in maintenance of aircraft.Keywords: Aircraft Maintenance, Corrosion, Aircraft materials, Non DestructiveInspection, Safety
