Sizing of axial flow compressors at aircrafts and a software about preliminary design

Hikmet KARAKOÇ 2003, 164 pages The axial flow compressors that have a history of approximately 150 years, have been provided a considerable addition to the developments that took place in aviation during the big wars in the 20th century. With the research in the biggest countries of that era, U.S., Germany and Britain, there has been a big competition to get the air superiority in the aviation. Therefore, with this new machine, obtaining higher pressure ratio, it has been possible to build faster, powerful and smaller weight/thrust engines. Having smaller front area compared to the centrifugal compressors, it positively effected both of compressor installation in the engine and engine installation in the aircraft. Also the parasite drag that caused by the engine was decreased. However, it is still possible to see the centrifugal compressors in some engines used in s ome a ireraft t hat flying c urrently. Also, t hey a re c ontinued t o use in large passenger aircraft's APU because of the advantage of the higher stage pressure ratio and being shorter. In this thesis, firstly was given some detailed knowledge about the preliminary design of an axial flow compressor, than, this process was explained. In the last chapter, it has been developed a computer program which compare the thermodynamic properties of a fluid in an axial flow compressor that has some certain inputs and evaluate the sizing process of an axial flow compressor aspect of preliminary design.
