Abstract (EN)

Objective: This in-vitro study aims to measure the temperature increases that may be reflected in periodontal tissues during the removal of broken instruments from root canals with ultrasonic instruments. Our evaluation criteria are to evaluate the effect of silicone oil applied to the root canals on the temperature increase on root surface while using an ultrasonic tip to remove broken instruments. Method: 80 extracted human mature mandibular molars were used in this study. The roots, which crowns were cut and brought to the same length, were instrumented with the same rotary instrument files. The notched files were broken in the root canals. A micro thermocouple was adapted to the root surface to measure the temperature increase on the root surface. The samples were embedded in the alginate prosthetic impression material. An ultrasonic device was used to remove broken instruments in the root canal. During the application, silicone oil was applied into the root canals in half of the experimental groups and the effect of silicone oil on the temperature increase on the root surface was evaluated. At the same time, ultrasonic tips were applied for different periods of time: 30-60-90-120 seconds. During the application, the temperature increase of the teeth in the environment brought to 370C with the help of a protothype device then data were recorded with a temperature recorder. The analysis of the data was done through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0 Statistics package program. Results: No significant difference was found between the temperature increases after 30 seconds of use of ultrasonic tips between the groups in where silicone oil was used and those studied dry (p>0.05). The temperature increase at 60, 90 and 120 seconds in the group with silicone oil were significantly higher than other group without silicone oil (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to this study, use of silicone oil in root canals caused increase of temperature on the root surface. Key words: Broken instrument, periodontal damage, silicone oil, temperature increase, ultrasonic
