Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of lower extremity sensory training on proprioception and functional capacity in hemiparetic individuals. 42 hemiparetic individuals were included in the study. Individuals were randomly divided into Control (n=21) and Study (n=21) groups. Bobath approach was applied to all groups for 45 minutes, 3 days a week for 4 weeks. Additionally, sensory training was given to the study group. Assessments were before treatment and at the end of 4 weeks. Modified Rankin Scale, Hodkinson Mental Test, Motricity Index, Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Test for foot sole sense, Lower Extremity Position Test, electrogoniometric hip, knee and ankle measurements for kinesthesia, Spor-KAT 550 Portable Computerized Kinesthetic Balance Device for balance and BTS G -walk Gait Analysis System for gait was used for assessments. In post-treatment comparisons of groups, statistically significant improvement was observed in MI, foot sole sense, especially in the forefoot region, 22 cm position sense and ankle kinesthesia sense in study group (p<0.05). In addition, there was statistically significant improvement in study group in hemiparetic side and total balance score in balance assessment (p<0.05). In gait parameter measurements, a significant improvement was found walking speed, hemiparetic side stride length, healthy side step length, healthy side stride length and hemiparetic side pelvis propulsion angle in study group (p<0.05). In control group, statistically significant improvement wasn't achieved in any parameters (p>0.05). In our study, it was found that lower extremity sensory training applied to hemiparetic individuals was effective in terms of functionality, superficial and deep sense, balance and walking in individuals. According to the results of our study, adding a somatosensory training program to the rehabilitation programs of hemiparetic individuals will contribute positively to the functional status of individuals. Keywords: Balance, foot sole sense, gait, proprioception, sensory training.
