International maritime organization and environmental sustainability

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has a global responsibility for the environmental sustainability of maritime transport and maritime activities. IMO has developed various regulations to protect the environment and prevent marine pollution in the maritime sector. These regulations play an important role in protecting the ecosystems of the oceans, reducing marine pollution and creating sustainable maritime practices. The environmental sustainability goals of the International Maritime Organization ensure the promotion of environmentally sensitive approaches in the maritime sector. In this context, solutions to global environmental problems such as marine pollution, carbon emissions and protection of natural resources are sought through international cooperation and regulations. The aim of this thesis is to examine the effectiveness of the International Maritime Organization's policies towards environmental sustainability goals and to evaluate the success of the strategies implemented to reduce the environmental impacts of the maritime sector. The thesis will examine the effectiveness of the International Maritime Organization's environmental regulations on the maritime sector and how these regulations are shaped by international cooperation and local practices. In addition, the results of the activities carried out by IMO in order to reduce the negative impacts of maritime transport on the environment will be evaluated.
