The impact of the chip crisis on relations between major powers in international politics

The global semiconductor chip shortage, which began in 2020, has had deep implications across multiple sectors, including military, healthcare, automotive, and consumer electronics. Semiconductors are essential components in modern technology, critical for the functioning of numerous devices that drive today's economy. The shortage has led to the cancellation and delay of numerous products, significant price increases, and substantial disruptions in supply chains. This study seeks to understand how countries are adjusting their foreign policy strategies and diplomatic engagements in the global semiconductor chip shortage on decision-making processes. By examining how various countries have responded to the crisis, this study aims to understand the shifts in international relations and diplomatic strategies caused by the shortage. The research explores the economic and technological factors that contributed to the crisis and analyzes their broader impacts on global politics. Utilizing a conceptual framework focused on foreign policy decision-making, the study highlights the dynamic between national interests and international pressures. To achieve a comprehensive understanding, the study relied on document analysis. This methodology allowed for a detailed investigation of the subject. The documents reviewed included academic articles, whitepapers, and policy documents. This methodological approach has not only contributed to the results: alongside existing knowledge, but it has also provided practical implications for organisations. The results obtained from the research reveal that the chip crisis has substantially influenced diplomatic negotiations, encouraging countries to adjust their foreign policies to address technological dependencies. This research enhances the understanding of how technological disruptions can reshape global political landscapes. Measuring supply chain resilience and making improvements can provide the greatest increase in supply chain resilience. Even if the current global chip shortage ends, more supply issues are likely to arise as demand for electronics increases.
