Negative mood regulation and personal indecisiveness as a predictive variables of forgiveness tendencies of university students

Abstract (EN)

In this research, it was aimed to investigate if the levels of personal indecisiveness and negative mood regulation subdimensions of struggle, confrontation, social support and withdrawing from negative mood levels predict the forgiveness and how the predictiveness of these variables are for female and male university students. The study group consists of a total of 828 students 502 (60.48%) of whom were female and 326 (39.27%) were male attending to Anadolu University in 2018-2019 academic year. The data were obtained by Heartland Forgiveness Scale, Negative Mood Regulation Scale and Personal Indecisiveness Scale. In addition, Personal Information Form was used to get demographic information of the participants. In the research, data was analyzed by means of SPSS package program. In data analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, stepwise regression analysis were used and the level of significance was accepted as .05. According to the results of the study, it was found that withdrawing from negative mood levels explained 29% of university students' forgiveness tendency, withdrawing from negative mood levels, personal indecisiveness and struggle together explained 33% of their forgiveness tendency. The findings of the research, the withdrawing from negative mood (β = .37) and struggle (β = .17) were positive predictors and personal indecisiveness (β = -.15) was a negative predictor of forgiveness. Accordingly, the predictors of male university students' tendency to forgive were found as withdrawing from negative mood (β =.35), struggle (β = .22) and personal indecisiveness (β = -.12), and predictors of female university students' tendency to forgive were withdrawing from negative mood (β = .43), personal indecisiveness (β = -.18), and struggle (β = .11).
