Examination of cyber bullying and cyber victimization among university students according to social adjustment and certain personal variables

Abstract (EN)

The research is a descriptive study which aim to explain the university students' cyber bullying and cyber victimization level according to the social adjustment and certain personal veriables. The study universe consists of the university students enrolled in Yıldız Technical University on the European side of Istanbul in 2015-2016 academic year. Of this study universe, 476 university students were selected using sampling table and cluster-sampling method as the study sample. "The Social Adjustment Sub-Scale in Hacettepe Personality Inventory", "Cyber Bullying and Cyber Victimization Scale" and a "Personal Information Form" were employed to obtain study data. SPSS21 Software Package was used for data analysis. University students of cyberbullying and cyber victimization levels of social cohesion (family relations, social relations, social norms and antisocial tendencies) and some personal variables According to determine whether to show a significant difference in the situation where you have a normal distribution with Parametric Statistics MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance ) it was used in the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis technique where it is not normally distributed statistics. Scheffe and Mann-Whitney U test was used to find the differences that arise from the Group. In the study, the significance level was .05. According to the study results, cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with low social adaptation levels were observed to be significantly higher than cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with medium social adaptation levels. Cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with low social adaptation levels were observed to be significantly higher than cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with high social adaptation levels. Cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with medium social adaptation levels were observed to be significantly higher than cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students with high social adaptation levels. With respect to gender, cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of male students with medium social adaptation levels were observed to be significantly higher than cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of female students. With respect to parent attitudes, cyber bullying scores of university students are significantly different. Cyber bullying mean ranks of students whose parental attitudes are authoritarian-oppressive were observed to be higher than the mean ranks of students whose parental attitudes are inconsistent-unbalanced, over protective, authoritarian-oppressive and ignorant. With respect to economic income, cyber bullying scores of university students were not significantly different. Cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students who conceal their identity on online settings were observed to be significantly higher than cyber bullying and cyber victimization mean ranks of students who don't conceal their identity.
