Abstract (EN)
Base isolation systems have become a significant element of a structural system to enhance the reliability and safety of the structures during an earthquake. In this thesis, the earthquake behavior of a five story steel building with base isolation was investigated. To this aim, firstly the fixed base case of the structure was analyzed and then compared with the base isolated case. The building under consideration was rectangular in plan, measuring 30 m by 15 m with 5 m bays in both direction. The isolated building was assumed to be supported by friction pendulum system (FPS). The parametric study focused on different friction coefficients of seismic base isolators of FPS and its effect on the response of the structure. The modeling and dynamic analysis were done using finite element program. Three earthquake ground motion records were utilized. The analysis of the results showed a significant improvement in the dynamic response of the model structure after the application of the base isolation.
