Abstract (EN)

This thesis is concerned with the field of recognition. A system for automated license plate recognition (LNPR) is proposed. The NPR (Number Plate Recognition) used is a system designed to help with the recognition of the number plates of vehicles. This system is designed for the purpose of the security system. This system is based on the image processing system. This system helps in functions such as the detection of the number plates of the vehicles, processing them and using the processed data for further processes such as storing, allowing vehicles to pass or to reject vehicles. NPR is an image processing technology, which uses the number (license) plate to identify the vehicle. The objective is to design an efficient automatic authorized vehicle identification system by using the vehicle number plate. The optical character recognition technique is used for the character recognition. The resulting data is then used to compare with the records in a database. The system is implemented and simulated in MATLAB, and its performance is tested on real images. It is observed from the experiment that the developed system successfully detects and recognizes the vehicle number plate on real images. The system is able to automatically detect and recognize the license plate number of vehicles passing through a certain location using image processing techniques. The proposed system does not require any additional configuration such as GPS or radio frequency identification (RFID). The system forwards images of passing vehicles to a computer where they are processed and identified. Different algorithms are incorporated in the proposed system such as localization, orientation, normalization, segmentation and optical character recognition (OCR). Afterwards the resulting data are compared against records in a stored database GUI that has been used with MATLAB Implantation and connected with database and SQL statements in order to store the required records and information or get data into the MATLAB workspace.
