Abstract (EN)

Introduction:In the course of systemic diseases, primaryhypogonadism, and other endocrine disorders may occur. Objectives:The study was aimed at evaluting the patients withchronic liver disease due to viral hepatitis, and examining hormonalchanges in cirrhotic patients. Methods: Follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone(LH), prolactin (PRL) and serum concentrations of thyroid-stimulatinghormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), free-triiyodothyronine(fT3),thyroxine (T4), estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG),progestrone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenodione weremeasured by chemiluminescent and radioimmunassay in those withcirrhosis and chronic liver disease due to hepatitis B and C. The dataobtained were analyzed using chi-square and t-test, with p<0,05 beingconsidered significant.Result: Statistical analysis of the results obtained from the observedpatients was compared with controls. A total of 149 patients withchronic liver disease and cirrhosis were included in the study. Patientswere grouped as mild, moderate and severe cirrhosis (Child Pugh A,Band C) (n=41), chronic hepatitis (hepatitis B and C) (n=57) andhepatitis B carriers (n=49) according to the type of their chronic liverdisease. We found that concentrations of T3, T4, FSH, LH, estradiol,SHBG, prolactin (p less than 0,05) were significantly higher andthose of testosterone and TSH (p less than 0,05) were significantlylower. Conclusions:The described disturbances of some of the observedhormones are complex, particularly in their relationship by which theclinical picture of the hepatitis B and C related cirrhotic patients andchronic liver disease can be explained. TSH and gonadal hormoneswere decresed, where as T3,T4 were incresased. We observed thatprimary hypogonadism and primary hyperthyroidism may occur inpatients with chronic liver disease due to viral hepatitis and in thosewith cirrhosis.
