Abstract (EN)

This study aims to determine the extent to which video-supported activities based on repetition strategy in cello education are effective in performing Turkish music pitches. The research method is action research. In action research, quantitative and qualitative data are used together. Therefore, the data of this research consist of both qualitative and quantitative data. Data regarding student performances were obtained from expert evaluations, student diaries, and teacher diaries. Throughout the research, all stages of the research were conducted by obtaining expert opinions. The research began with 7 cello students; however, during the process, two students voluntarily decided to withdraw from the study. Thus, the research was completed with 5 students. Four Turkish music maqams were selected for the research plan: Uşşak, Hicâz, Karcığar, and Sabâ. Four "peşrev" pieces from these maqams were selected and performed by the students as a pre-test. The researcher composed three exercises for each selected maqam. In the research, two lesson hours were allocated for each maqam, and the maqam-based exercises composed by the researcher were studied individually and face-to-face with each participating student. Throughout the research, diaries were kept by both students and the teacher during all conducted lessons, and the data obtained from these diaries constituted the qualitative data of the study. All lessons carried out for the research were video recorded. After the completion of lessons for each maqam, students performed the peşrev pieces as a post-test. These performances were video recorded for expert evaluations. Content analysis was performed on the qualitative data of the research. The obtained findings were interpreted according to the specified themes and codes. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. According to the results derived from the findings, it was concluded that the applied instruction was effective in enabling students to perform Turkish music pitches. As a result of the post-test and pre-test comparison, it was determined that the students performed the "peşrev" pieces more accurately.
