Abstract (EN)

War is a universal phenomenon and has horrible effects on those who experience it directly or indirectly. Pat Barker is a renowned modernist British novelist and her Regeneration trilogy has a significant place in the literary canon of war literature for blending both historical and fictional account of soldiers and veterans who experienced the Great War which took place between 1914 and 1918. Her acclaimed Regeneration Trilogy, including Regeneration (1991), The Eye in the Door (1993) and The Ghost Road (1995), narrates the psychological fractures of the traumatized soldiers, who feel estrangement and disintegrity due to wounds inscribed both on their bodies and psychology. The novels are told through the soldiers' and veterans' testimonies, bitter memories, internal conflicts, and posttraumatic stress disorders that effect both their psychology and body deeply. Before the depiction of the battlefield, narrated in the later parts of the novel, the author begins the Trilogy by narrating the stories of several soldiers who experienced the war, and their pain and psychological states. The trilogy starts with diagnosis of different mental illnesses of soldiers, resulted from the horrors of war that mirrors their psychology and mental health. Sigmund Freud's theories related to trauma, defence mechanism, desire of death and therapeutic methods are unfolded in Barker's Trilogy clearly. So, this study aims to study Pat Barker's Trilogy; Regeneration, The Eye in the Door, and The Ghost Road, that clearly narrates the irreparable damages of war on individuals and society, with special emphasis on psychoanalytic approaches and theories of Sigmund Freud.
