Abstract (EN)
The acquisition and progress of speech skill poses a significant problem for the German Language and Literature and German Language Education departments who learn German as a second foreign language after English in Turkey. Based on this fact, this study aims to analyse the progress of German speech competence of the students who learn German as a second language after English along with their linguistic, pragmatic and discourse competence to form a whole through corpus-based data collected via a longitudinal study. In the experimental part of the study the corpus-based data was extracted from 20 exam and control speeches of 5 to 20 minute length applied to 8 students at the German Language and Literature department of Ege University Faculty of Letters and this data has been transcribed according to "the discourse and conversation-analytic transcription system" (GAT-2). Out of the speech evaluation criteria, the applicable ones to the study's corpus were summed in three categories. According to these criteria have been analysed on one exam and 2 control speeches for each subject and the progress in 3 years was determined. The study reveals that the speech competence of the students of the German Language and Literature Department who took part in the study as subjects did not improve significantly over the three years of undergraduate education following their first year at the university solely through attending courses. Furthermore, the German speech patterns of these students, the problems they face in this field and the strategies they employ have been determined.
