Stereotypical words in foreign language Turkish textbooks and frequency of using stereotypical words by foreign students

Language and culture develop together. A person who learns a language is also considered to have learned that language's culture. Foreign language teaching is the most important element of cultural relations. The routine words which reflect the social culture, the stereotypical words which are said against certain events, have an important place in the teaching of foreign languages in terms of contributing to the learning of the language and the cultural elements it contains. Routine words provide language users with various expressive possibilities in the form of words, verbal and written communication that provides ease of communication. Routine words can be defined according to their social, functional, cultural, contextual and semantic characteristics (Gökdayı, 2008). In this study, the frequency of passage of sentences and phrases in foreign language Turkish textbooks was determined. 264 phrases were identified and exemplified within the context in which they are encountered for the first time. The routine words were evaluated and classified according to their contextual, functional, structural, semantic properties. Classification was done as blessings, curses and routine words used in social cultural relations. In order to determine the frequency of using routine words by foreign students studying at Antalya International University, completion of the discourse test was applied to 50 students and it was determined that students learned to speak many phrases different from the routine words in the course book. It seems that Turkish language has a very rich accumulation of routine words and phrases. In the last part of the study, the general conclusions reached regarding the stereotypical words were given; followed by future suggestions for researchers. It is our honor, as the researchers, to imagine that this study will guide further studies on routine words and will be a reference source for future researchers.
