The U-shaped relationship between age and happiness, the case of Turkey in 2013-2020

The main purpose of this study is on the sustainability of a happier life by investigating the effects of happiness on people's lives in the context of economy. Since the concept of happiness is gaining importance in the economics literature, it is important to investigate the effects of socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, health and education and economic variables such as income, inflation and unemployment on happiness. It includes the examination and detailed investigation of the U-shaped relationship between age and happiness, which is accepted in the economic literature, in the case of Turkey for the years 2013-2020. In the study, the data of TUIK 2013-2020 Life Satisfaction Survey were used. As a result, it was concluded that there was a U-shaped relationship between age and happiness was valid in Turkey in 2013-2019. It has been found out that the happiest people are those aged range 18 - 24 and those aged range 65 and over. In the middle age range, the level of happiness is minimum. In Turkey, in 2020, it has been revealed that the U-shaped relationship between age and happiness is not valid. The findings show that the level of happiness decreases in people aged range 35-44, but it increases in the middle age group in the 45-64 age range. However, the U relationship continues to decline in the middle age range.
