Abstract (EN)

In this study, various electrokinetic properties (pH dependent zeta potential change, Iso-electrical point, effects of metal ions with different valence number on zeta potential) and some surface properties (contact angle with water, hydrophobic character and surface free energy) of MBAOM (2-[(methoxy-1,3-benzothiazole-2-il)amino]-2-oxoethylmethacrylate) - GMA (glycidylmethacrylate) copolymers synthesized from MBAOM) and GMA monomers in polymer chemistry laboratory at the Department of Chemistry in our University. Coomposition of copolymers used in the experiments are 77% MBAOM - 23% GMA, 45% MBAOM - 55% GMA and 19% MBAOM - 81% GMA. Metal salts are FeCl3, CaCl2 ve KCl. Test liqueds used in the calculations of surface free energy are water, ethylene glycol and diiodo methane. Surface free energy calculations were performed by Zisman, Fowkes and Van Oss Acid-Base methods. As a result, (i) Chemical composition (structure) of the copolymer has a determining effect both on their electrokinetic and surface properties. (ii) Hydrophobic character of the copolymer increases and according to this its surface free energy decreases with increasing of GMA ratio in the copolymer composition. (iii) Metal ion type has a great effect on zeta potential of the copolymers, that is, Fe3+ ions with trivalent are able to reverse the surface charge or zeta potential of copolymers from negative to the positive.
