Abstract (EN)

Aim: In our study, it was aimed to compare the depressive moods of 50 newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients and 50 control groups without diabetes and any primary mental disorder who applied to Ordu University Training and Research Hospital outpatient clinics and to investigate the relationship between depressive moods, glycated haemoglobin (a1c) and Body Mass Index, which varies according to the blood glucose regulation status of newly diagnosed diabetics and control group at initial diagnosis and 3-month period controls. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional and complementary study was carried out by using face-to-face questionnaire technique in 50 newly diagnosed Type 2 DM patients over the age of 18 without primary mental disorder and 50 controls who applied to our outpatient clinic between October 2023 and March 2024. The questionnaire consisted of a total of 41 questions in 3 sections including demographic information, health information and habits, general quality of life information, findings at the time of diagnosis and Beck Depression Scale (BDS). Results: The case group consisted of 50 people, 54% of whom were women. The mean age of the group was 51.4±12.08 (min 24 - max 76).Significant positive correlation was found between glycolysed haemoglobin (a1c), and age, body mass index and educational status. A significant positive correlation was found between Beck depression score and alcohol. A significant positive correlation was found between Beck depression scale scores at the first visit and at the control visit. There was a statistically significant decrease in Body Mass Index, glycolysed haemoglobin (a1c), Fasting Blood Glucose and Beck Depression Scale scores between the first visit and 3rd month control in the case group. In the control group, there was no statistically significant difference in the same parameters between the first visit and the 3rd month control. Conclusion: It can be concluded that newly diagnosed DM patients will not only feel better symptomatically with blood glucose regulation, but also that the disease can be controlled, a better diet and treatment compliance over time, a more significant decrease in laboratory parameters, and a significant improvement in terms of depression. Key Words: Diabetes Mellitus, Beck Depression Scale, Depressive Mood, Blood Glucose, Body Mass Index
