Effect of vibration applied during heel stick in newborn on pain

Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of vibration application on the pain due to heel lance in infants in newborn period. The research is a randomized controlled and experimental study. The population of the study consisted of 0-28 day-old newborns who were admitted to the Şanlıurfa Birecik Three Number Cuma Gökdoğan Family Health Center between September 15, 2018 and December 15, 2018. The sample consisted of 56 newborn infants (experiment: 28, control: 28) who were determined by power analysis. Data were collected with Neonatal Presentation Form and Newborn Infant Pain Scale (SPI). In the experimental group, a device was used which vibrated during the procedure about 30 seconds before heel blood was taken during heel blood reception. Newborns in the control group had no intervention. In both experimental and control groups, two nurses took part in heel blood application. The first nurse performed the heel blood intake for all newborns, and the second nurse videotaped the procedure for the duration of the procedure. The pain of the newborn was evaluated by videotaping from the video records by a nurse and two specialists who received heel blood after 15-20 seconds and five minutes before the procedure. In both the experimental and control groups, heel blood collection was performed by the same nurse. Mean, number and percentage distributions, Mann Whitney U test and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. There was no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of SCI scores of nurse, the first and second expert (p>0.05), however, there was statistically significant difference in SCI scores of nurse, the first and second experts 15-20 seconds after the procedure and five minutes after the procedure (p<0.05). According to the results of the study, it was determined that the vibration method used in heel blood collection was easy, noninvasive and nonpharmacological advantage, and it was found to be effective in decreasing the pain levels of newborn babies.
