Examining the concept of locality and verbal culture within the context of typographic design and an implementation project

Although the locality seems to have been second-placed today, it is a phenomenon that cannot be ignored in the way societies form their own selves. In the world where globality is at the forefront, every country still carries and maintains its own cultural features. Although the produced goods, the tools used, the design and the artworks have developed to another dimension with advancing technology, the examples that have developed from the early ages to the present have always been traces of locality. In the research conducted in the first part of the thesis, the concepts of locality, culture, verbal culture and visual culture were examined. The reflections of locality and the concepts of verbal culture and visual culture on art and design have been revealed. In the second part of the thesis, the typographic approaches developed by countries within their localities are examined. For this reason, the research is limited to countries where localization can be clearly seen in typography. The way in which selected countries, their cultures and alphabets are reflected in typographic styles has been observed. By examining the typographic styles of the West and East, it was found that each country tended to a different subject and brought to the fore a different point in typography. In the third section, it is observed that the local typographic styles created have undergone a process of change with the scientific and technological developments in the world. The tendency of the new generation to fall outside the typographic standards of the countries to which they are affiliated, especially with the current of Postmodernism, has emerged. At the same time, computer technology, which has developed with the age of information and design today, has enabled typography to acquire new design areas. Thus, the new generation gained both the choice of typographic style independent of its own locality and the new design areas where it could mobilize its typography in the computer environment.
