The effect of learning motivation and knowledge levels on preventing pressure wounds in intensive care nurses

The study was conducted to determine the effect of learning motivation and knowledge levels on the attitude to prevent pressure sores in intensive care nurses. The population of the analytical study consisted of 124 nurses working in the intensive care units of a public hospital and 110 nurses who accepted to work among these nurses. Data were collected by general information form, Attitude Scale for Preventing Pressure Ulcers, Knowledge Evaluation Scale for Preventing Pressure Ulcers and Learning Motivation Scale. Evaluation of the data, percentages, averages Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman correlation coefficients were used. The mean age of the nurses was 31,71±7,91 and 64,5% of them were female. 62,7% of the nurses have undergraduate degrees. Mean working time of nurses was 9,28±7,68 and the mean working time in intensive care unit was 5,41±4,41. The attitude score of the nurses to prevent pressure ulcer was 41,65±4,93, learning motivation score was 61,18±5.47 and the level of knowledge about pressure wound was 15,73±4,08. It was found that nurses' learning motivation and their knowledge about pressure wound affect their attitudes towards preventing pressure wound (p<0.05). In the study, it was found that nurses had a positive attitude towards preventing pressure ulcers, their learning motivation was high and their level of knowledge about pressure wounds was insufficient. Learning motivation and knowledge of the pressure wound affect the attitude towards preventing the pressure wound. In order to maintain and improve the positive attitude of the nurses towards the pressure wound, it has been proposed to implement practices aimed at increasing the level of motivation and knowledge.
