Employee anxiety levels in intensive care ünit nurses and determinant factors

SUMMARYThe research has been carried out to make the nursing profession run in an efficient and a productive way and to state the relationship between intense care nurses? anxiety level and demographic features such as education, marital state, whether they have physical disease or not, whether they have children or not because of more stressors on them.The work stress that leads million dollars financial losses by deranging physical and pshychososical health of working people was stated by United Nations Working Health and Security Council in 1999 as follow: `The work stress is harmful physical and emotional reactions when the necessity of profession does not fall into line with the needs, capacity or source of working people.It has been stated that in case of exposure to the factors causing stress in a long term ,the other affect is anxiety which has bad infleuences on human beings in terms of physiological and pshychosocial. It has been stated that anxiety is a physiological reaction against over energy because of stress reaction. In working period, anxiety is one of the short-period result of stress.The research has been conducted as volunteerism and in accordance with the permission of the hospital management which was taken by intense care nurses who work in Mersin State Hospital and Hacettepe University Hospital between December, 2011 and May, 2012. The form consisting of 26 questions such as age, gender, education level, worked intense care unity and including the identification of data stressors causing anxiety on person in order to state sociodemographic features has been evaluated by Beck Anxiety Inventory by getting datas. The forms of questionnaire is research oriented and it has been clearly prepared that participants can answer them.The age ranges of the nurse in the research change between 21 and 48 and their average age is 28.62.In the research %35 of nurses work in state hospitals; %60 of nurses work in university hospitals. Many of the nurses in the research, %21,1, consist of the staff who work in neurology, internal disease and intense care. The average anxiety score of the nurses in the research is 33,476. According to findings, the anxiety level of the nurses who has been participated in the research is so low that affects them almost none.The nurses taken part in the research has been asked the causes of anxiety. %18,34 of them said that they do not have enough time per patient because of busy work, %14,99 of them said that the burden of work has increased because of inefficient staff number, %14,54 of them said that they have to care about more patients, which is more than it has to be.Key words: Anxiety, business environment, nurse, quality of life, working life
