Abstract (EN)

Modernity is a trend that started in 17th century in Europe and affected all over the world in time and caused very big changes and innovations in many areas of social life. By these innovations, the lifestyles and values of the people about the personal and social lives changed seriously and gave up their places to new-modern style. It is not possible to determine all the changes realized by modernity as positive or negative. Religion is a form of life that has a certain world-view and a phenomenon of believing in God and acting according to this belief. It sanctifies some behaviors and so encourages these actions, or forbids some behaviors by calling them as sins for avoiding them. Religious values generally-direct many areas of the social systems in traditional societies. In modern societies, religious values lose their power by the time. Our study investigates the exchange and interaction of the traditional values and behaviors at neighborhood, technology, consumption, shopping and family subjects, with the modernity in Turkish society in which both traditional and modern living types are present together and so it could be called as a crossing society. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the traditional attitude and behaviors of the high educated-devout women changed or not with regard to the modernity in the areas we mentioned above, at their social and personel lives. Our assumption is that the members of the case group accept and apply some parts of modernty- forms to their daily lives, according to the permissions and limits of the religion, and not being against the religion, without leaving their traditional forms completely. Our research area contains one hundred high educated-devout women living at different locations of Asiaside of stanbul. Our assumptions were tried to be tested by the results of the interview applied to this case group.
