Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to examine the views of Generation Z individuals in Eskişehir, born between 1996 and 2010, on fashion within the context of gender. Global literature suggests that Generation Z, valuing inclusivity and diversity, tends to embrace concepts such as gender fluidity, genderless fashion, and gender-neutral fashion, viewing fashion as a means of self-expression. Current fashion trends also reflect efforts to move beyond the binary gender system. How this situation is reflected in everyday life practices, how Generation Z individuals experience this approach in the Eskişehir sample, and how it is received in different socio-cultural contexts remain important questions. In this qualitative research study using a case study design, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 participants reached through snowball sampling. The data obtained were examined using content analysis. As a result of the content analysis, two themes emerged: "the definition of fashion" and "gendered clothing." Findings indicate that 42% of participants rejected gender distinction in clothing, 28.5% supported maintaining norms, and 28.5% remained undecided. It was found that Generation Z questions traditional gender roles and perceives fashion as a means of individuality and expression, although social and cultural factors may restrict this freedom. The study provides empirical data for gender studies and fashion design. The findings are expected to guide designers and companies targeting young consumers in developing new ideas. Given the limited number of studies conducted in Turkey on fashion and gender, it is anticipated that this thesis will contribute to filling the gap in this field.
