Education for the mentally disabled in creating educational material investigation of design process

Education has an important place in the life of every individual. However, individuals? with disabilities carrying out their life skills and their adaptation to the society must be held by special education. To overcome every obstacle, different type of training is needed and that is known by everyone. The mental retardation of mental deficient causes a lack of full - complete learning which normal developed individuals have. For the education of mentally retarded individuals, the teachers use such kind of education materials which are used for normal growth children or the teachers try to adapt these materials for the mentally retarded ones. The problem of designing should be solved to have much more efficiency from these education materials. In this case, it is obvious to have the contributions of a graphic designer to create special education materials for disabled individuals. In this study, the education environment of the mentally retarded individuals is observed and also the teachers of mentally retarded individuals are interviewed. Depending on this data, examples of materials are developed by the researcher by taking into consideration of the ideas of the experts. Then the materials were prepared for use and one application was held with the students. At the end of the application the opinion of the teacher was taken.In this study, how to solve the problems of the teachers creating materials have been contributed and the importance of creating special materials for mentally retarded individuals has been emphasized.Keywords: Special Education, Mental Disability, Educational Materials, Visual Design, Education Material Design.
