11 FLASH BUTT WELDING APPLICATION ON 16MnCr5 CHAIN STEEL AND INVESTIGATIONS OF IT'S MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (M.Sc. Thesis) Uğur ARABACI GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2003 ABSTRACT In this s tudy flash butt welding has been applied 16MnCr5 chain steels and their micro structure and mechanical properties have been investigated. During experimential upseting current time and upset pressure were selected as variable parameteres. Further more normalisation heat treatment was aplied to the samples welded and effect of heat treatment on welding quality and mechanical properties have been investigated. Experimental results showed that the variable welding parameters and applied heat treatment effected the mechanical properties of welding where highest hardness values have been observed on weldig zoon. It was found also that increasing upset current time and upset pressure, increased the tensile strenght of materials. In this study the best flash butt welding parameters for 16MnCr5 chain steel have been tried to determined. Science Code : 710 Key Words : Flash butt welding, Page Number: 94 Adviser : Assoc.
