06 Mil Yz A 6163/1 Terceme-i Tıbb-i Cedîd-i Efrencî: (1a-99b) Analysis and text

This thesis has been prepared by transliterating into the Latin alphabet the folios between 1a-99b of the manuscript titled Terceme-i Tıbb-ı Cedîd-i Efrencî, cataloged under the number 6163/1 in the Manuscripts Collection of the National Library. The manuscript contains numerous drug recipes categorized under 22 different headings, including how these drugs are prepared, what they are used for, and their dosages. The manuscript was selected as the primary focus of this study since it is a translation and incorporates features related to literature beyond being mere drug recipes. Terceme-i Tıbb-ı Cedîd-i Efrencî consists of a compilation of prescriptions translated from various Western medical sources and provides valuable insights into Ottoman translation practices. The primary aim of this thesis is to transliterate a previously untransliterated text into the Latin alphabet and to reveal its vocabulary, and subsequently to examine the text's relationship with literature. The aim of questioning how this medical book can be positioned within the field of literature is to offer a new perspective on how different disciplines can be examined from a literary viewpoint. As a translated text, this work provides an opportunity to investigate the cultural aspects of Ottoman translation practices. Besides the matter of translation, the presence of the storytelling tradition in the manuscript also contributes to its consideration within the field of literature. This thesis asserts that Terceme-i Tıbb-ı Cedîd-i Efrencî is related not only to medicine but also to literature.
