Foundations in Amid and its surroundings according to Hurufat Notebook No 1067 (1703-1722)

One of the most important sources in Ottoman historical research is undoubtedly the Hurufat notebooks in the Archives of the General Directorate of Foundations. There is a lot of information about foundation institutions in these notebooks. The Hurufat notebooks used to be arranged by the Kazaskerlik, the executive organ of the scholar class. This body is divided into two as Anatolian and Rumelia, and its jurisdictions have been determined. Thus, the notebooks were also divided into two as Anatolian and Rumelia, and the districts were recorded in the notebooks in alphabetical order, starting with the letter "elif". The Ottoman State gave maximum importance to those foundation institutions, hence, the state organizations had extended up to the most remote towns and villages. In notebooks; the details like the name of the district, town, village, neighbourhood, the person who built the foundation, the name of the foundation, the type of duty, the name of the person who left the job, the name of the person who started the new job, the name of the person who made the designation and the date of designation had been noted. Under these circumstances, it can be said that notebooks are highly versatile. Moreover, it can also be said that Hurufat Notebooks have a very important place in historical research, especially due to the serious information they contain about socioeconomic and demographic structure.
