Representation of US ideology in cinema after the September 11 events

This research focuses on the representation of U.S. ideology in cinema after the 9/11 attacks. The study aims to identify how the changing U.S. ideology has been addressed in Hollywood cinema. It aims to identify how the changing U.S. ideology is represented in films after the 9/11 attacks. For this purpose, the changing ideologies have been identified and how they are conveyed in Hollywood cinema through discourse analysis has been determined.The films to be analyzed in this context are United 93 (2006), World Trade Center (2006), The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), and The Report (2019). The findings indicate that the 9/11 terrorist attacks affected Hollywood cinema as much as they did America. The attacks were a turning point for the ideology and policies developed against terrorism. The new ideologies emerging with the attacks are built on reducing the damage caused by the attacks and rebuilding the shattered ideology.In this context, ideologies such as patriotism and nationalism, terrorism and security, and individual struggle emerge in Hollywood cinema. Additionally, existing ideologies like the American Dream, exceptionalism, othering, and Orientalism evolve and gain a new dimension. These changes are conveyed in Hollywood cinema through character and identity, location and fictional world, dialogue and discourse, and technical codes.
