Exercise is an accepted method in treatment of patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Pilates is an exercise which developed by Joseph Pilates and became a popular exercise method recently. The aim of this study is investigate and evaluate the effects of pilates exercise on metabolik control, body composition and physical performance in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus at the age of 12-17.Thirty one patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus were choosen from outpatients of Ege Üniversitesi Hospital İzmir, Turkey. 17 patients determined as study group ( mean age 14,2±2,2 years) and 14 patients determined as control group (mean age 14,4±1,7 years). Control group performed pilates exercise during 12 weeks. The exercises Performed 3 days in a week and every training session lasted 35 minutes. At the begining and end of the study, subjects underwent tests to determine the body composition, physical performance and metabolic control.At the end of study, there were significant alterations in physical performance of study group. Peak power, mean power, vertical jump and flexibilty values of study group increase significantly. There were no alterations significantly in this parameters in control group. Fat mass is decreased significantly in control group and there were no changes in study group. HbA1c decreased in control group while there were no alteration in HbA1c percentage of study group.The pilates exercises which lasted 12 weeks, increased the physical performance of the patients with type 1 DM at the range of 12-17 years. However there were no changes in parameters of metabolic control.Keywords: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Pilates, Exercise
