Abstract (EN)

The period of September 12, 1980 has a very important place among the events that changed or affected the history of Turkey, mainly due to political, social and economic reasons. Although it is mostly evaluated from this aspect because it is a military intervention, September 12 is an important event worth investigating and examining, especially with its economic reasons and results. Making a military intervention, especially in a country like Turkey, which has a social purpose of westernization, struggling with economic difficulties and having geopolitical importance when evaluated globally, is a process that needs to be planned comprehensively and evaluated in terms of its preparation and results. Under any circumstance, although societies do not like to be under oppressive administrations, some reasons that make this situation acceptable have been put into practice with what so called 'social consent'. At this point, the extreme difficulties of the society going through economically, the chaotic environment in which it is affected socially, and the war environment or the imminent threat related to it, prepares the nation to produce social consent about the regime or system change. At this point – on the condition that it is evaluated together with the conditions of the period – the mechanisms that Althusser defines as 'Ideological Devices of the State' come into play. IDSs according to Althusser are social institutions such as schools, places of worship, political parties and communication. In this study's scope, the press, which is considered as the 'Communication ISA', has been discussed. Although it is defined as 'media' today, when the ownership principle of the concept of the printed press-newspaper, which is called the Press due to the sample universe of the study, and the economic connection and interest equation are evaluated, the press can also be positioned as a social guide or, in other words, a production center of 'social consent'. The basis of our study is the statements made by the owner of Hürriyet newspaper, Erol Simavi, in an interview 8 years after the September 12 intervention in his own newspaper. Simavi stated in his interview that the press is one of the five great forces and that although the army made the coup d'etat , the press had the power to prepare the army for the coup d'etats. Although this statement has been considered as a late confession by some circles, it has been evaluated from various angles in the axis of the research. Based on the date of January 2, 1980, when the "warning letter" was given to the government by the Turkish Armed Forces was published in the Hürriyet newspaper, the period until the end of the year when the intervention took place (01.01.1980-31.12.1980) was handled as the process leading up to and after the intervention, and Hürriyet newspapers during this period which were published daily had been analyzed accordingly. Discourse analysis was applied by examining the paper day by day, and the role and attitude of the newspaper in the intervention was examined through its editorial policy.
