Perceptions of Turkey in international press releases regarding the 15 July 2016 coup attempt

The digitalization of the media enables every information and update to reach the public directly from the scene of an event as it occurs or it is produced. On 15th of July, the coup attempt that took place in Turkey and the developing events spread rapidly in the world with the use of digitalized media, creating great social, political and economic repercussions. The fact that the unsuccessful coup attempt was covered by the international media made it important to examine the news in the selected publications within the representation of the source, message and the emotional valences of the message. Analyzing the thoughts and discourses contained in the news and comments, through a qualitative method of research, the discourse/ speech analysis of ethos, logos and pathos representation, was found significant in terms of revealing deep intellectual and emotional approaches which are related to Turkey. Individually, the 87 texts which are accepted as data in the study and included in the study as a sample, were selected and analyzed from news and comments published by different international newspapers: Izvestia from Russia, The Guardian from United Kingdom, The New York Times from the United States of America, Jurnalul National from Romania and La Razon from Spain, between July 15 and August 15, 2016. Following these analyzes, interviews and detailed correspondences were conducted with media professionals, selected from the newspapers taken as samples, and the answers to the questions posed to them were evaluated as data for the study. The study is based on four hypotheses. According to the data obtained, the first and third hypotheses of the study were partially confirmed and the second and fourth hypotheses were completely confirmed.
