The Morea During 1570-1573 Ottoman-Venetian conflict

The Peloponnese was an important region for both the Ottomans and Venice, as it was one of the important junctions of the waterways in the Mediterranean. As we entered the last quarter of the 16th century, the Ottomans and Venice, who had come face to face as a result of the escalation of the competition in the Mediterranean, would engage in a struggle for Cyprus. The naval battle of Lepanto, which took place on the northern shores of the Peloponnese after the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans, would perhaps be the most important event of the century for both sides. In this study, the situation of the Peloponnese peninsula during the war period, which ended with the ahidname given to Venice in 1573, is discussed in the lens of archival sources.
