Effects of the Patrona Halil uprising of 1730 on Maurus Jókai's A Fehér Rózsa (Halil the Pedlar) and Aptullah Ziya Kozanoğlu's Patronalılar

In this work, the effects of the historical event of the Patrona Halil Uprising of 1730 on nineteenth century Hungarian literature and Turkish literature in the first years of the Republic are analyzed. In Maurus Jókai's A Fehér Rózsa (Halil the Pedlar) the Patrona Halil uprising is regarded as an inspiring, encouraging factor. In his work titled Patronalılar; however, Aptullah Ziya Kozanoğlu aims to warn the public against the mindset that wants to abolish the Republican regime and return to the "subject" way of being by presenting the negative aspects of the same uprising in the founding stages of a new state. First, the Turkish effect on the Hungarians and the origin of this imagery formed in the mind of the Hungarian public are explained, via frontier orientalism. Then, after the author biographies, the Turkish imagery is examined with summaries of the works. In the final part, the historical background of the uprising is detailed and the development of the Patrona Halil Uprising is reviewed comparatively in both works with historical sources. In conclusion, it is displayed how the same historical event was portrayed in both Turkish and Hungarian literature, based on the zeitgeist of the period the authors were in.
