Tukish-Sweden relations in the firs half of the 18th century and Mehmed Said Efendi's Sweden embassy (1732-1733)

03. Summary Throughout history, foreign affairs and diplomacy have been e very necessary element in state' maintaining their political existences. Diplomacy, to protect international relations and states' profits, is an important factor in following every kind of happening and development in neighbouring states or neighbouring regions. The Ottoman State, until the end of the 18th century, tried to do this by sending ambassadors to many different countries. After the Karlofça treaty in 1699, The Ottoman State, having had a considerable loss of land, and still been, in the following years, under the threat of Russia and Austria, forced itself to find an ally in Northern and Eastern Europe with respect to military and diplomacy. Sweden, which was in dispute with the Russian government, was an ideal ally for The Ottoman State, and during the 18th century - particularly in the firs period - constituting a force-unity supported The Ottoman State in respect of military, politics and commerce. And even though the apparent reason that Mehmed Said Efendi was sent to Sweden as an ambassador in 1732 was to collect the debt back which Charles XII had borrowed, the main goal was to prevent the intimacy developing between Sweden and Russia and sustain the alliance. We understand that he was able to realize his aim when we take into consideration the trade treaty in 1737 and the alliance treaty in 1740 between The Ottoman State and Sweden during his time as an ambassador. This thesis is a detailed research of the information about Mehmed Said Efendi as an ambassador in Sweden, an the "sefaretname" ambassadorial accounts written for this embassy by Mehmed Said Efendi himself, his travelling to this country, his diplomatic affairs along with some other ones, and socio-cultural information relating to Sweden and The Baltic region.
