An examination of novel reviews published in newspapers and periodicals between the years 1919-1923

In this research, theoretical writings on criticism as a genre and criticism practices on local and foreign novels in newspapers and periodicals during the National Struggle and Armistice years which lasted from 1919 to 1923 were analyzed. The basic principles forming the novel critic were researched. The first chapter of the dissertation, which consists of three chapters, includes writings studying criticism as a literary genre in addition to the introduction of opinions on the definition of criticism, its purpose, its methods and complications in the aforementioned period. Reviews on Turkish novels and novelists and the reviews on foreign novels and novelists by critics were analyzed in the second and third chapters respectively. In the conclusion part, the main approaches with which the critics evaluated the novels and what they referred to as the object of criticism were stated briefly.
