The transcription and legal interpretation of the Family Law in Sharia Court Register of Trabzon no. 1959/145

Ottoman Sharia Court Registers have utmost importance with regard to Islamic-Ottoman law studies. Thanks to these court registers, it can be determined how Islamic law and the law imposed by the Sultan are applied as well as how legal life in the history and region is where the court records belong to. With this study, we have classified and analyzed the records concerning family law in Trabzon Sharia Court Register No. 1959/145 within the framework of Islamic-Ottoman family law. In the scope of the study, firstly the court register was transferred from Ottoman Turkish to Latin letters. Afterward, only the records relating to family law have been interpreted under three main headings: the marriage, the breakdown of marriage and children, in the light of the fundamental Islamic law books, works of the History of Turkish Law and fatwa collections.
