1973 Elections and election propaganda reflected in the press

In this study, the developments in Turkey's domestic and foreign policy until the elections held in 1973, the 1973 Elections held under the shadow of the 12 March 1971 Memorandum, the parties and the election processes of the parties were examined. While carrying out this study, newspapers were used and the election declarations and propaganda of the parties were evaluated in the context of the press. The escalation of the tension in the streets in Turkey since 1969, and the inability of the government to intervene in this tension, laid the foundations for the idea of the necessity of intervention within the army. Tensions began to arise in the positive relationship between the military and politics, which the Demirel Government had maintained since 1965, when Demirel brought the Amnesty Law for former DP members to the agenda. In foreign policy, after the opium cultivation crisis with the USA, as a result of the embargoes imposed by the USA, Turkey was devalued and entered an unstable economic period. As a result of these developments, the army forced the Demirel Government to resign with a memorandum in 1971. A stable government could not be established in the two-year period after the memorandum until the 1973 elections, and four governments changed until the elections. These governments were respectively I. Erim, II. They are the governments of Erim, Ürgüplü and Melen. Under these conditions, Turkey held the 1973 General Elections. Before the elections, amendments were made to the Constitution and the Political Parties Law and the Election Law were enacted. Eight parties participated in the election, these are; Republican People's Party (CHP), Justice Party (AP), National Salvation Party (MSP), Turkey Unity Party (TBP), Nation Party (MP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Republican Trust Party (CGP) and Democratic Party. is (DP). While AP entered the elections under the leadership of Demirel, CHP Ecevit participated in the elections under the leadership of MSP Erbakan, DP Ferruh Bozbeyli, CGP Turhan Feyzioğlu, TBP Mustafa Timisi and MP Cemal Tural. On the same day as the general election, elections were also held for the members of Group C of the Republican Senate. For the first time, "preferential voting" was used in these elections and participation in the 1973 Elections was 66.8 percent. In the elections in which eight parties participated, seven parties won seats in parliament. As a result of the 1973 elections, a government could not be formed and a 100-day period of government crisis occurred. As a result of this crisis, the Republican People's Party and the National Salvation Party formed a coalition government.
