Abstract (EN)

In this study, the employment conditions and harmonization with neoliberal economy of the Kurdish women who migrated to Istanbul by necessity are examined. This necessity was due to the disappearance of an environment of trust in the Southeastern and Eastern provinces as a result of increasing acts of violence between the security forces and terrorist organizations such as the PKK and Hizbullah in 1990s. The empirical scope of the thesis covers the immigrants starting from the year of 1990 when it was an intense conflict environment. They migrated because of the deterioration of the economic conditions in their villages and due to the disruption of traditional livelihoods such as agriculture and livestock. Therefore, "forced migration" not only includes migrants who were directly affected from armed conflicts but also those who were indirectly affected. The study is limited to women who migrated between 1990 and 2000. The scope of the study is limited to women who are disadvantaged in their working life due to identity differences and gender stereotypes and also with their increasing duties in the household and in the public life. The spatial limitation of the study is the Kanarya Neighborhood in Istanbul, which hosts a dense population of such migrants. The Kanarya Neighborhood is also a place where the migrants who live there resemble each other politically, economically and socially (in terms of social classes). It is seen that the interviewed immigrants adapt to urban life with similar strategies and relationship networks. Starting from the date when women came to the city, working conditions of women who migrated to Kanarya between 1990-2000 were examined. Their rights over their incomes, their educational status and whether they can make savings were asked in the interviews. The impact of their current living and economic conditions on the raising of their children and whether their poverty is transferable to future generations were also investigated by using the interview method.
