The border identities in the cinema of Turkey during 1990s

This dissertation will try to understand 1990s being remembered as both a precipitous drop and a turning point in the history of the cinema in Turkey with assemblages, multiplications, diverse combinations it contains by considering its fluidity and dinamism. It will analyze how the new and different ways of seeing and perceiving make themselves possible within the scope of the potentialities of transcultural cinema, considering the deviation from the lines that used to be taken on in the previous periods as a result of the social, cultural, political, economic and technological transformations in 1990s, Turkey, by territorializing queer theory and comprehending its relations with cinema. The three films from 1990s which discuss the daily life experiences and practices of individuals who live in the dark back streets of metropolises generally as immigrants or somehow touch the cultural geography of Turkey within the compass of their own diverse and multiple temporalities and spatialities are the selected samples of the research. In the light of intersectional feminist methodology, visual text analysis and critical discourse analysis methods will be used in order to be able to comprehend the present potentialities shown by the images in these films. In this direction, the dissertation will investigate if there can ever be provided a space for an opposition or a resistance against the normative unactualization of the multiplications and the diverse combinations in order to allow access to the present potentialities with the help of cinema that can think and can infiltrate into its audiences' temporalities, spatialities, and perceived worlds.
