Abstract (EN)

Design A population based retrospective case-control study, 316 cases, 319 controls. Methods Cases and Controls All cases were obtained from Izmir Cancer Registry (ICR): male age ?15, ICD-O3 topography codes 67,0 to 67,9, diagnosed bladder cancers during 1993-1998, residing in Izmir city(n=1746). Izmir Cancer Registry is a population based cancer registry. The study was limited with Social Insurance Institute of Ministry of Labor and Social Security (SIIMLSS). Insured cases were identified from among 1746 cases comparing Izmir Cancer Registry with Department of Retirement of SIIMLSS (n=316), 301 retired, 15 working at present. Controls were selected from Department of Retirement of SIIMLSS among male and retirement numbers were marked among Izmir residents, similar age(±3) and all working period(±3) for retired cases, from insurance number for working cases (n=320). Data Collection The retirement dossiers for the retired persons were taken from Archives of SIIMLSS and the data about insurance premiums (the total days) of the workers (who are still working) were collected from the computer registries. There were ?the numbers of companies? and ?the numbers of the days of payment premiums? in both data sources. It is learned how long have the people worked there according to ?the number of the days of payment premiums?. The data were written to the standard data collection forms. The working periods of the persons in each company is outlined and recorded. Then the companies which belong to the specific industry are found from the computer from Department of Employer of SIIMLSS. The ones which can not be found on computer are investigated from register from Provincial Departments of SII. The types of the jobs/industries and the working periods are connected in a standard method. We used modifying the classification of economic activity according to Labour Statistics of SIIMLSS for grouping the codes of industry. Case-Control Analysis Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated for ?ever? versus ?never? employed in each type job/industrial group. Results We didn?t examine a variety of risk factors for bladder cancer including cigarette smoking, life style factors, past medical conditions, family history of bladder cancer. However, we considered that cases and controls became among insured a homogeneity population while we selected controls for this study. In our study an excess of bladder cancer in petroleum, chemistry and rubber industry and leather industry workers has been reported. Key words: Bladder cancer, occupation, case-control study.
