Computation of the life table of the urban population in Turkey of the year 1995 with the gender differentiation by using brass logit life table method

The thesis aims to compute the life table of the urban population in Turkey of the year 1995 with the gender differentiation by using Brass logit life table system. To achieve this goal, the censuses of population of the years of 1990 and 2000 and the death statistics of the year 1995 are used as the data. First of all, the life table of the urban population in Turkey of the year 1995 is computed with the data of the urban population in Turkey and the death statistics of the year 1995 by using the Reed-Merrell method. Moreover, with the data of the urban population in Turkey of the years 1990 and 2000, the life table of the urban population in Turkey is estimated for the intercensal period, i.e. the year of 1995, by using the Preston-Bennett method. Furthermore, the life table of the urban population in Turkey of the year 1995, previously estimated by using Preston-Bennett method, is interpolated by using the West model of Coale and Demeny regional model life tables. By this way, the data is obtained to apply the Brass logit life table system. Finally, the smoothed life table of the urban population in Turkey of the year 1995 is constructed by using the Brass logit life table system, for which two life tables are chosen: the first one is the estimated life table, which is computed by Reed-Merrell method, and the second is the standard life table, which is the interpolated version of the one computed by Preston-Bennett method. In conclusion, it can be stated that for mortality computations, that is performed by using the data obtained from the censuses of population in our country, it happens errors and deviations for early ages, yet later ages (35 and over for males, 45 and over for females) represent the mortality level better. Additionally, it can be said that if a proper model and its level (Coale-Demeny, United Nations, general standard etc.) are chosen, the Brass logit life table system smooths the results close to the correct ones.
